RENT A GRANDMA
- According to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, around 9.1 million people aged 65 or older are still working. That’s
- approximately one in four seniors—many seeking extra income to supplement modest pensions. For older women, the challenge
- is especially demanding: many never had access to higher education or long-term employment and now struggle to find meaningful
- work later in life. To address this, a Tokyo-based company has created a unique initiative called OK Obaachan, which translates
- to ‘OK Granny.’ The project allows people to “rent” a grandmother for an hourly fee, offering both practical help and companionship
- while giving older women renewed purpose.
- The OK Obaachan program is run by Client Partners, a firm dedicated to connecting women of all ages and backgrounds with
- job opportunities. Describing itself as a “women-only company,” it manages around 100 women aged 60 to 94 in the OK Obaachan
- division. No degree or professional experience is required—only the wisdom and empathy gained through a lifetime of experience.
- “Many people want to continue contributing to society as they get older,” says the company. “And the experience and abilities of
- older people are of great use to society.”
- At a fixed rate of 3,300 yen per hour (about €19), clients can hire a grandma for a wide variety of tasks: cooking lessons,
- babysitting, household chores, or simply having someone to talk to. Others reach out for advice on relationships, family conflicts,
- or even heartbreak. The OK Obaachan website lists a range of stories: grandmas who helped mediate family disputes, taught new
- mothers how to care for babies, attended weddings in place of missing relatives, or cheered for children at school events.
- Not everyone can join the program. The ideal OK granny, according to Client Partners, is kind, dependable, and hardworking,
- with an open mind. That last quality is key, as some clients seek help in situations such as single motherhood or divorce, which
- conservative Japanese society still views critically.
- Beyond its novelty, OK Obaachan touches on a deeper social issue. In a society where isolation is rising and family ties are
- weakening, many older women feel left behind. Combined with sexism often masked as tradition and persistent gender
- expectations, that sense of invisibility can be profound. For these women, the project offers more than extra income—it restores a
- sense of ikigai, or “reason for being.”
- As Japan ages, initiatives like OK Obaachan remind society that experience, kindness, and connection remain invaluable—no
- matter how old you are.
CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)
A1. According to the text, OK Obaachan…
Solución
(b) hires elderly Japanese women as family assistants.
The project allows people to ‘rent’ a grandmother for an hourly fee, offering both practical help and companionship”.
A2. According to the text, hired grannies…
Solución
(c) need no academic qualifications.
No se les exige ningún título ni experiencia profesional (línea 9): “No degree or professional experience is required—only the wisdom and empathy gained through a lifetime of experience.”
ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES FROM THE TEXT. (0.5 points each)
A3. Some elderly Japanese people find it difficult to live on their pensions alone.
Solución
TRUE. “(That’s approximately one in four seniors—)many seeking extra income to supplement modest pensions.”
A4. Grandmas sometimes act as members of the family in public.
Solución
TRUE. “(The OK Obaachan website lists a range of stories: grandmas who…) attended weddings in place of missing relatives” (línea 15).
A5. Grandmas are expected to maintain a nonjudgmental attitude while performing their duties.
Solución
TRUE. “(The ideal OK granny… is kind, dependable, and hardworking,) with an open mind. That last quality is key, as some clients seek help in situations such as single motherhood or divorce, which conservative Japanese society still views critically.”
A6. The Japanese no longer hold a traditional view on family issues.
Solución
FALSE. “(some clients seek help in situations such as) single motherhood or divorce, which conservative Japanese society still views critically.”
A7. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points)

USE OF ENGLISH (3 points; 0.5 points each). CHOOSE OPTION 1 OR OPTION 2 AND ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS FROM THAT OPTION ONLY.
OPTION 1
REWRITE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES WITHOUT CHANGING THE ORIGINAL MEANING. THE NEW SENTENCE MUST CLEARLY PRESENT A DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC STRUCTURE.
- BEGIN AS INDICATED OR USE THE WORD IN BRACKETS.
- THE WORDS PROVIDED MUST NOT BE CHANGED IN ANY WAY.
B1. I’ve never heard such a sad story before.
That’s…
Solución
That’s the saddest story I’ve ever heard.
Never… such a + adjetivo se convierte en un superlativo con ever: the saddest… I’ve ever heard. Se mantiene el present perfect.
B2. If they want to attract more visitors, tickets should be cheaper.
In order…
Solución
In order to attract more visitors, they should make tickets cheaper. (también In order to attract more visitors, tickets should be cheaper.)
B3. It is forbidden to drink alcohol on campus.
You…
Solución
You mustn’t (o aren’t allowed to / can’t) drink alcohol on campus.
La prohibición impersonal (it is forbidden to) se expresa con el sujeto genérico you y un modal de prohibición: mustn’t o can’t + infinitivo sin to, o be not allowed to.
B4. Paul didn’t think about his options clearly, so he didn’t make the right decision.
If…
Solución
If Paul had thought about his options clearly, he would have made the right decision.
Tercer condicional, sobre una situación pasada que no ocurrió: if + pasado perfecto, would have + participio.
B5. We don’t have any flour left for the muffins.
(RUN)
Solución
We have run out of flour for the muffins.
El phrasal verb run out of significa “quedarse sin algo”.
B6. I don’t like movies as much as I like TV series.
(PREFER)
Solución
I prefer TV series to movies.
Prefer A to B significa “preferir A a B”: lo que gusta más va detrás de prefer y lo que gusta menos, detrás de to.
OPTION 2
REWRITE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES WITHOUT CHANGING THE ORIGINAL MEANING. THE NEW SENTENCE MUST CLEARLY PRESENT A DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC STRUCTURE.
- BEGIN AS INDICATED OR USE THE WORD IN BRACKETS.
- THE WORDS PROVIDED MUST NOT BE CHANGED IN ANY WAY.
B7. I last saw Alice two weeks ago.
(FOR)
Solución
I haven’t seen Alice for two weeks.
I last saw…
B8. María Dueñas is said to be the greatest violinist at the time.
People…
Solución
People say (that) María Dueñas is the greatest violinist at the time.
Se pasa de la pasiva con sujeto personal (is said to be) a la activa con el sujeto genérico people: people say (that) + oración con el verbo conjugado (is).
B9. Both hoodies were unsuitable for Martin.
Neither…
Solución
Neither hoodie was suitable for Martin. (o Neither of the hoodies was/were suitable for Martin.)
B10. At the interview, they were asked the date of their wedding anniversary.
(MARRIED)
Solución
At the interview, they were asked when they (had) got married.
B11. I will send you the location, and you must wait for him there.
(WHERE)
Solución
I will send you the location where you must wait for him.
El adverbio there se refiere a the location, así que se sustituye por el relativo de lugar where, y desaparece and. Es una relativa especificativa, sin comas.
B12. Could you help me find a smart outfit for my graduation ceremony?
(MIND)
Solución
Would you mind helping me find a smart outfit for my graduation ceremony?
Una petición educada con Could you…? se puede expresar con Would you mind + -ing (“¿te importaría…?”).
