USE OF ENGLISH (3 points; 0.5 points each). CHOOSE OPTION 1 OR OPTION 2 AND ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS FROM THAT OPTION ONLY.

OPTION 1

REWRITE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES WITHOUT CHANGING THE ORIGINAL MEANING. THE NEW SENTENCE MUST CLEARLY PRESENT A DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC STRUCTURE.

  • BEGIN AS INDICATED OR USE THE WORD IN BRACKETS.
  • THE WORDS PROVIDED MUST NOT BE CHANGED IN ANY WAY.

B1. I have never seen a more interesting documentary.
That’s…

Solución

That’s the most interesting documentary I have (ever) seen.

B2. Unlike my parents, who enjoy watching movies in the sitting room, I like to stream them in bed.
Whereas…

Solución

Whereas my parents enjoy watching movies in the sitting room, I like to stream them in bed.

B3. My neighbour doesn’t like parties very much.
(FOND)

Solución

My neighbour is not (very) fond of parties.

Be fond of + nombre o -ing significa “gustar, tener cariño a”. El verbo pasa a ser be, y very much se convierte en very delante del adjetivo. Sin very la frase también es correcta.

B4. Security knows the number of people inside the building at every time.
(MANY)

Solución

Security knows how many people (there) are inside the building at every time.

The number of people se sustituye por una interrogativa indirecta con how many. Al ser indirecta, lleva el orden de una afirmativa: how many people there are, no how many people are there. También se puede omitir there, porque how many people funciona como sujeto: how many people are inside the building.

B5. Tim founded an advertising firm, but it has recently gone bankrupt.
(WHICH)

Solución

Tim founded an advertising firm which has recently gone bankrupt.

Las dos oraciones coordinadas con but se unen en una sola con una oración de relativo: which sustituye al pronombre it, que se refiere a an advertising firm, y desaparece but. También es correcto escribirla como relativa explicativa, con coma: …an advertising firm, which has recently gone bankrupt.

B6. Clara invited Nigel to dance.
“Would you…

Solución

“Would you like to dance (with me)?” Clara asked Nigel.

OPTION 2

REWRITE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES WITHOUT CHANGING THE ORIGINAL MEANING. THE NEW SENTENCE MUST CLEARLY PRESENT A DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC STRUCTURE.

  • BEGIN AS INDICATED OR USE THE WORD IN BRACKETS.
  • THE WORDS PROVIDED MUST NOT BE CHANGED IN ANY WAY.

B7. It is known that some influencers buy their Instagram followers.
Some influencers…

Solución

Some influencers are known to buy their Instagram followers.

Pasiva impersonal con sujeto personal: It is known that + sujeto + verbo → Sujeto + is/are known + to-infinitivo.

B8. It’s a pity I can’t afford to travel abroad next summer.
(WISH)

Solución

I wish I could (afford to) travel abroad next summer.

Afford to se puede mantener o quitar: I wish I could travel abroad expresa la misma idea.

B9. Google Maps and some snacks are the only things you need for a good hike.
All…

Solución

All you need for a good hike is Google Maps and some snacks. (también All that you need…)

All (that) you need equivale a the only thing(s) you need. El sujeto pasa a ser all, que funciona como singular, por eso el verbo es is.

B10. Someone is looking after the baby while the couple are out for the evening.
(HAVING)

Solución

The couple are having the(ir) baby looked after while they are out for the evening.

Vale tanto the baby como their baby.

B11. I’m sure that Joe stayed up gaming all night, because he looks very tired.
(MUST)

Solución

Joe must have stayed up gaming all night, because he looks very tired.

Para expresar una deducción casi segura sobre el pasado se usa must have + participio. Sustituye a I’m sure that… + pasado simple.

B12. You can reduce stress significantly by doing yoga.
As long…

Solución

As long as you do yoga, you can reduce stress significantly.

As long as (“siempre que”) introduce una condición, igual que if. La forma by doing se convierte en una oración con sujeto y verbo conjugado: you do yoga.

Solución

There weren’t as many male players as female ones/players at the game.

El comparativo de superioridad (more… than) se convierte en un comparativo de igualdad negativo (not as many… as). B2. You shouldn’t post negative comments on social media.
If I…

Solución

If I were you, I would not post negative comments on social media.

Un consejo con should se puede expresar con el segundo condicional If I were you, I would(n’t)….

B3. I have such loyal friends that they will never say no to any of my plans.
(SO)

Solución

My friends are so loyal (that) they will never say no to any of my plans.

Such va delante de adjetivo + nombre (such loyal friends); so va delante de un adjetivo solo (so loyal).

B4. It’s possible that I forgot my keys at home.
(MAY)

Solución

I may have forgotten my keys at home. (o My keys may be at home.)

B5. Samantha borrowed Jack’s laptop.

(WORN)

Solución

B8. What time is the next English class, please?
Can you…

Solución

Can you (please) tell me what time/when the next English class is (, please)?

Pregunta indirecta: tras Can you tell me, la pregunta lleva el orden de una afirmativa, con el sujeto delante del verbo (the next English class is, no is the next English class). What time se puede sustituir por when, y please puede ir detrás de you o al final.

B9. My parents live in the house now, but it used to be my grandparents’ house.
(WHERE)

Solución

The house where my parents live now used to be my grandparents’ (house).

B10. “Don’t tag me in your videos,” Brian said to me.
Brian told…

Solución

Brian told me not to tag him in my videos.

Una orden negativa en estilo indirecto se construye con tell + persona + not to + infinitivo. Cambian los pronombres: me (Brian) pasa a him y your (yo) pasa a my.

B.11. Lola goes to bed earlier every night, but she always feels tired in the morning.
No matter…

Solución

No matter how early Lola goes to bed every/at night, she always feels tired in the morning.

B.12. I am really upset that it is going to rain on our anniversary!
If only…

Solución

If only it didn’t/wouldn’t rain on our anniversary!

También sería correcto If only it weren’t going to rain….
